Chapter Seven

Serena could feel the soft feather mattress moulding itself to her contours, the solid weight of Nicholas lying next to her. He was staring at her, his eyes glittering, watching her. She could feel his breath, his mouth as he pressed urgent kisses on to her eyelids, her cheeks, her ears, her neck. She could smell him, male heat and the elusive scent that was just Nicholas, distinctively Nicholas, only Nicholas. And she could hear him. ‘Serena, Serena, Serena’, his voice so weighted with need that she could not be mistaken and she could not resist, not now.

He kissed her. No butterfly kisses this time, no teasing, just unleashed, untamed passion. Lips and tongues and teeth clashing, biting, licking, kissing. Hot kisses, hard kisses, deep kisses. Kisses which sought to know. And now hands too, seeking, searching, learning.

There were too many clothes between them. Nicholas released Serena’s mouth, pulling her upright. ‘I need to see you.’ He shrugged his own coat off, dropping it carelessly to the ground before turning her round to untie her dress, loosening it, easing it off, kissing her neck, licking into the hollow of her throat, trailing a line of kisses across her shoulders. He pulled the long sleeves down her arms, helping her step out of the dress, leaving it pooled on the floor on top of his coat.

He made short work of the intricate lacings of her corset. A tiny part of her mind noted jealously how expert he was with buttons and ribbons and fastenings, then she forgot all about it. Her long petticoat was next, carefully pulled over her head, his hands running over the curve of her waist, her ribcage, the outline of her breasts as he removed it, touching each indentation, learning her body as if memorising it. Standing before him in her chemise, Serena shivered under his scrutiny, a wild excitement taking hold of her in the heat of his gaze, relishing the feeling that he was devouring her with his eyes. No fear this time. Not even embarrassment. His urgency made her shameless. Her nipples hardened, clearly outlined against the thin cotton.

His eyes on her were like polished slate as she reached up to remove the pins that held her hair in place. Long tresses uncoiled from her coiffure. Nicholas groaned, kissing her, twisting the molten gold in his hands, fanning it out over her shoulders, crushing her hard against his body.

Still too many clothes. Impatiently he tugged off his neckcloth. Equally impatiently tugged his shirt free from his breeches and over his head, sighing as Serena pressed herself against his muscled chest, her hands roaming over his torso, across his back, his shoulders, his ribs, her mouth trailing kisses.

And still too many clothes. Nicholas rapidly divested himself of his top boots, buckskins and undergarments, to stand before her naked. Watching him from the bed, Serena shyly drank in the long legs, the line of his buttocks, the indentation of his waist, the breadth of his chest and shoulders.
